Creating a budget friendly nursery

Over the past couple of months, we've been gathering some basic supplies needed to make life with baby easier. Between getting up early for yard sales and consignment sales in the fall, stalking craigslist and an obligatory trip to Ikea, we've put together a nursery we hope will make our little boy happy and comfortable.

Because I am particularly proud of how we put this room together for less than what many new parents choose to spend on a crib alone; here is the breakdown of what we spent on our nursery:

2 gallons low VOC paint from Lowes---$56
Crib (including mattress!) was purchased from a friend---$75
Dresser was purchased off craigslist---$75
Glider and ottoman purchased off craigslist---$60
Bookcase & green cloth toy baskets from Target---$60
Steel lamp & orange shade from Ikea---$27
Orange circle rug from Ikea---$9
Steel shelf from Ikea---$20
Paul Frank alphabet flashcards from Amazon---$10
Bamboo blinds from Lowe's---$50
Natural wood frames from Jerry's Artorama---$13 each

Of course, none of this would have been possible without my favorite husband. He did all of the painting, measuring, drilling, and assembling while thinking about the little boy that will soon help him on such projects in the future.

So baby, if you're reading this, we want you to know that we are prepared for your arrival. And until you're ready to make your appearance, your father and I will be hanging out in your nursery dreaming up ideas of what you will be like.

AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME !!!!!!!

The room is soooo inviting - I was showing it to Wendy and she said it should be on HG-TV and I agree.

You guys did an absolutely amazing job and obviously Lil' Killy's room is a labor of love.

love, mom

What a beautiful room! Orange and green are so lovely together!!

I'm looking for something just like the bookcase with the baskets you go from Target for my 3 year old's room. Do you remember what they're called? Thanks!

Can you tell me how you connected the wire to the walls? Nails?

Thanks for the positive feedback everybody!

Tricia, the white 9-cube organizer is by Closetmaid, we picked up ours on sale at Target (but now cannot find it one their website but probably are still available at the store). The canvas cubes are sold individually in different colors. Here is a link to he same product on the Lowe's website: http://tinyurl.com/29mm9c (but more expensive there).

Heather, the cable is connected to eyehooks screwed into drywall anchors at the ends. The cable loops through and is then clamped with a small cable clamp (hardware all from Lowes). I'm adding a picture of how it connects to the wall to better show it. Hope that helps!

You did an amazing job on the room. I like how you are using your dresser as double duty for a changing surface too, I think changing tables are such a waste of money and resources! Congrats and best of luck!
